Got Rifle

The term rifle refers not to a specific gun but a class of firearms distinguished by the spiral grooves or “rifling” etched into the barrel of the rifle. There are rifles designed for every conceivable situation. The rifle as we know it evolved over centuries which was all made possible by one simple invention.

Gunpowder was invented in China somewhere around the 9th century by Taoist monks who were searching for an elixir of immortality but instead, accidentally created a explosive powder that would forever change the course of human history and, in fact, the world. Over the course of history, advancements in gunpowder would eventually lead to the worlds most prevalent weapon, the rifle.

A Brief History
:

· 12th century: Chinese use gunpowder for rudimentary bombs and cannons

· 14th century: Introduced to European warfare leads to development of modern cannon to overcome thick castle walls.

· 15th century: Gunpowder revolution truly begins with development of hand operated fire arms like hand cannons and muskets. Gunsmiths groove barrels to reduce residue build-up. Grooved “rifling” was found to stabilize bullet flight paths and increase accuracy. The rifle is born.

· 16th century: Wheel lock guns are developed for greater efficiency and rate of fire than early match lock guns. The flint lock was developed later that century to as an improvement of Wheel Lock.

· 19th century: The most important century for firearm development. The industrial revolution made rifling affordable. The Development and evolution of self-contained cartridges lead to more advancements in technology and design in one century than the entire history of the firearm. Single shot Breech loaders quickly replaced muzzleloaders. French Needle gun lays groundwork for bolt action design. Single-shot rifles gave way to the invention of repeating rifles with Colt's cylinder fed gun. Lever action, magazine fed repeaters like Spencer Repeating Rifle and Henry Repeating rifle changed the climate of firearms. Colt develops pump action Lightning model. Mauser designs magazine fed bolt action rifles which see use into the 20th century.
