A respectable range of effective cartridge sizes provides ample flexibility when finding the rifle that best matches the shooter and the scenario.
On the smaller side of the scale, .243 Winchester cartridges were originally designed for varmint shooting but are more than capable of taking down a full size deer with a well aimed shot. The high velocity and generally flat trajectory of this round give it a reputation for accuracy, making it a good choice for longer range shots in open areas. The smaller caliber means less recoil making it friendly to the smaller or younger hunter.

Larger rounds, typically variants of a .30 caliber such as the .30-06, are among the most popular rounds for hunting deer, preferred for their stopping power especially against a running target. The heavier bullet generates more momentum giving it a “brush breaker” effect, allowing it to continue on its path unimpeded through dense woodland areas.

Deer rifles are available in every action style, with most manufacturers offering models chambered in several of the accepted big game calibers. Skill level, hunting environment and personal preference are ultimately what determine which rifle is best.
